New brains for The Freedom Toaster
There is something oddly-uplifting about slipping a cd/dvd into a Freedom Toaster's drive and
having it burn/toast you a whole bunch of quality software. For free!
Not enough South Africans have had the privilege, because they are not
aware that they exist and because there are too few of them out
there. That is all about to change, however!
We are very excited to announce that Upfront Systems have been
contracted to develop the software for the second-generation Freedom
Toasters. Breadbin Interactive from Cape Town, plans to release the
first battalion of Freedom Toasters on their quest to invade the
Western Cape, very soon. These Freedom Toasters will boast Plone brains.
The Freedom Toaster is a self-contained computer station where anyone
can burn open source software and operating systems onto blank CDs.
Other free digital products available include photographs, music and
literature. The project was inititally driven by a need to make open
source software freely available in an environment where the high cost
and limited availability of bandwidth, was a severe constraint.
Unlike your typical vending machine, Freedom Toasters dispense products
for free and these products act as catalysts for increasing knowledge,
leading to greater freedom. You are also free, in fact you are
encouraged, to pass further copies on to your friends.
Go on, get a slice from the Freedom Toaster!
