Flotron and MyCity souped up
Sometimes success is also the Mother of Invention!
A few years ago we developed a system for Flotron to collect data from their
data-logging devices that are distributed all over the countryside. The
data is then processed and presented through their MyCity portal
which we also helped them develop. They must be pretty good at what
they do, because there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of
data that has to be collected and processed daily. The original system
and methodology was struggling to cope with the literal flood of data
and was becoming a bottleneck to the process.
Improvements were introduced in a phased manner, starting with
implementing a more robust database and optimising the dataprocessing.
This resulted in a 300% improvement in throughput.
Then we changed the communications protocol between the platform and
the remote loggers. The new protocol is very innovative, cost-effective
and robust and an unusual way to use email!
The final step in this process was to introduce a facility whereby
Flotron can now remotely configure their data-loggers.
At this time approximately 15 million records are added to their
database every month!
