South Africans wanting a hassle-free content management system(CMS) should look to Plone, says Upfront Systems' CEO Roché Compaan.
An advocate of open source, Compaan says bad business practice has eroded consumer confidence in web applications.
"Consumers are wary of adopting technology that does not deliver what it promises, and for many businesses and individuals a public website has failed them," says Compaan.
"It has failed and continues to fail, because IT companies dump technology on them without educating them in its proper use and function."
Responding to the problem, Upfront Systems has announced a new Plone hosting service that includes setting up the CMS, migrating content and providing ongoing support.
Plone is written in Python and runs on the popular Zope application server. Plone can be used as a groupware tool as well as a web publishing solution. It scales to large numbers of users, and its sophisticated workflow, security and workgroup functionality make it ideal for both company intra- and extranets. (See a list of features on Plone.org.
Compaan says that using the Plone CMS, companies can easily update content on their website without using technical staff or third party companies.
"Sharing information online with your customers and colleagues should be just as easy, if not easier, than doing your banking online. And having documents accessible from anywhere at all times should become the norm," he says.
Upfront Systems has also released useful Zope and Plone tutorials under a Creative Commons licence.
