OpenOffice in Ubuntu Feisty do not display any icons in toolbars ...
At the outset I did not realise what was wrong with my OpenOffice. It looked somehow strange to me, but I did not immediately click what was amiss. I was a bit unsettled, because it has been awhile since I worked on a Linux desktop, so I ascribed my unease to that. Eventually it penetrated, though ... there are no icons in my OpenOffice toolbars!
I muddled through the text-only toolbars for weeks, every now and then feebly trying to find a solution. Then the day arrived that I decided 'enough is enough'.Now, I may be a perpetual newbie, but I do know about setting preferences and customising different areas of my desktop environment. I immediately selected 'tools' and then 'options'. I went to 'view' in the tree on the left looking for something obvious that has to be set. There I found an item 'Show icons in menus', but it was already selected. I unselected and reselected it (as if that would convince the computer or application of anything!) and then had a look - no luck. I then shut down OpenOffice, hoping it would 'accept' the change at start-up. Still no luck ... That item had nothing to do with toolbar icons in any case, but I am a newbie and was desperate!
Having been beaten into submission and apathy by computers many times in my life, I skulked off and licked my wounds for another few days.
Then I remembered that one can customise your toolbars, so I confidently proceeded to 'view', then 'toolbars' and eventually 'customise'. There I clicked on 'modify' and 'change icon', whereupon OpenOffice crashed spectacularly!
This time I 'plukked moer' (got angry) and, luckily, reached for Google. A few minutes later I had icons in my toolbars!
The Ubuntu Feisty installation I used, did not install the icons with OpenOffice. That explained their absence and also the crash, when I asked OpenOffice to use them.
I simply went to Synaptic Package Manager (apparently my friend!), selected all the 'openoffice.org-style-xxxx' packages I could see and installed them.
Voila!!! I can now brag with a whole selection of icons on my toolbars in OpenOffice ... AND I can change them!!
